Our courses are designed to equip you with the skills and confidence you need to transition to a flexible new career on a timeline that suits you.

In today’s blog post, we chat with Sherri, a Becoming A Proofreader graduate who did just that: she took advantage of our Guaranteed Work offer with our partner company Proofed and plans to gradually transition into full-time proofreading.

Take a look at our catch-up below.

Hi, Sherri! What made you consider Becoming A Proofreader?

I was looking for a career change that would let me continue working from home. The online reviews for this course were really good.

What were you doing before you started the course?

I am self-employed and own my own business in the early childhood education sector.

Was there anything surprising or challenging in the course for you?

There are a lot of different elements involved in proofreading, beyond grammar and spelling, and it can take some practice to become proficient at it.

What has been the single best benefit of having done the course?

The opportunity to start working right away.

How has your transition to working as a freelance proofreader with Proofed been?

Amazing! I’m transitioning from one career to another while balancing the financial and emotional needs of my family. The flexibility of working for Proofed has been key to helping me be successful. I’m gaining the experience I need, in a supportive environment, to launch a sustainable freelance career on a timeline that doesn’t sacrifice my family’s quality of life. The feedback and resources provided by Proofed have helped me to continue to develop my skills.

How has life changed for you as a freelance proofreader?

This is the start of a new chapter for me and my family. Working as a proofreader will give me the ability to be present for my children as their needs change. It gives me the flexibility to have a healthy lifestyle and improve my quality of life.

What is your day-to-day routine like now?

A bit hectic as I transition between careers. I work 11 hours a day in early childhood education and take proofreading jobs, but over the next few months, I hope to be only proofreading, making my routine more flexible, slowing the pace of my life down, and allowing me to be more present in each moment.

Was the course good value for money?

Yes! It paid for itself in the first month of working!

What do you enjoy most about proofreading?

Learning about things I never would have been exposed to before. Some of the documents are incredibly interesting, and, since I love reading, I feel like I’m getting a crash course on a new topic when I proofread.

Where do you proofread?

I have an office set up that’s comfortable, but I love being able to proofread anywhere: the kitchen island, the trailer while we’re camping, or the backyard gazebo. As I mentioned before, the flexibility of this work is what drew me to it.

What do you do when you aren’t proofreading?

I spend time with my kids, camp, read, and hike.

Is there any advice you’d give to someone who is currently thinking about taking Becoming A Proofreader?

It doesn’t have to be overwhelming to think about changing careers or creating a side hustle. The course is straightforward, easy to fit around an existing schedule or job, and will give you everything you need to start a freelance career. Although it’s self-directed learning you can do at your own pace, there is lots of support available.

Is there anything else you want to share?

As our kids get older, my husband and I envision a life where we can work remotely and travel across Canada more. We want to work at jobs we enjoy that also help us enjoy our lives. We want to be present for our children and stop chasing time. Taking this course has been a significant step towards achieving that goal.

Do you have a website or LinkedIn profile?

Yes, I have a LinkedIn profile.

If I take the Knowadays proofreading course & I have questions or comments on something being taught, can I send an email about it and get a reply from a qualified proofreading teacher?
