Start with Becoming A Proofreader and then move on to Becoming An Editor when you’re ready. You can (and should!) work through the lessons at your own pace.

At the end of each course, there is a final assignment, which is graded by a tutor. If you achieve distinction scores of 80% or higher in the final assignment of each course, you will be invited to join Proofed as a freelance proofreader and editor, getting paid to work on real client documents from day one.

If you don’t achieve a distinction score on your first attempt, you can purchase additional attempts, and the work guarantee still applies in the same way.

To be able to onboard to the Proofed platform, you must be registered for tax purposes in a country that has a dual-tax treaty with the US. No! You can complete each course at your own pace, and you can take time off whenever you need to. And the tutor team is available to help you get back in the swing of things if you need an extended break.

Some learners start Becoming An Editor immediately after completing Becoming A Proofreader, while others leave a gap between the two courses. As long as you score 80% or above in each final assignment, you can onboard with Proofed, and it’s absolutely fine to take your time.

A good editor needs to have strong proofreading skills and be able to recognize and fix errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Completing Becoming A Proofreader first builds a strong foundation for moving on to the more advanced techniques covered in Becoming An Editor.

If you don’t get the score you are hoping for, you can purchase additional attempts with new test documents. The work offer with Proofed applies in the same way whether you need one attempt or three to get a distinction score in each course.

After completing your Becoming A Proofreader final assignment, you will be sent detailed feedback and have the option to schedule a one-on-one call with a tutor to discuss your work. If you want to improve your score, you can purchase up to two more test attempts. You are welcome to progress to the editing course before making another attempt, but we recommend ensuring you have a strong grasp of proofreading before exploring editing concepts.

Similarly, if you would like to try for a higher score after taking the Becoming An Editor final assignment, you can purchase up to two further attempts with new assignment texts.

If you do not achieve distinction scores in both Becoming A Proofreader and Becoming An Editor, then you will not be eligible to take up the work guarantee with Proofed. But it is not the end of the road! Not achieving distinction scores does not automatically mean you are a bad proofreader or editor; it often just means that you need more study and practice to become comfortable with the tasks involved.

Our courses are designed to equip you with all the skills you need to set up as an independent freelancer, no matter how you do on the final assignments. With ongoing access to the lessons, you can continue to learn and develop your skills. Once you’ve studied the areas flagged in your assignment feedback and feel confident in your abilities, you can apply to other proofreading agencies, market yourself on freelancer sites, or launch an independent business.

All editors at Proofed are self-employed freelancers, able to accept as much or as little work as they like and when it suits them. It is not an employed role, and the amount of work available at any time varies. Many people treat Proofed as a part-time commitment or as one strand in their freelance plan. It is possible to build up your workload to a full-time level, but this does not happen right away, and it is not guaranteed.
