FAQs About the Editorial Course Suite
-
How does the Editorial Course Suite work?
When you purchase the Editorial Course Suite, six courses will be added to your account: Becoming A Proofreader, Becoming An Editor, How To Fact-Check, AI Prompting For Writers And Editors, Formatting In Microsoft Word (both the Mac and Windows versions), and Becoming A Freelancer. Start with Becoming A Proofreader and then move on to Becoming An Editor when you’re ready. You can (and should!) work through the lessons at your own pace. If you achieve distinction scores of 80% or higher in the final assignments of both courses, you will be invited to start accepting paid proofreading and editing work with Proofed.
You can complete the rest of the courses at your own pace, developing new skills that will support your editing work and open up additional streams of work.
-
What is the benefit of buying the courses as a suite?
When you purchase the six courses together, you get 25% off, with the discount automatically applied at checkout. You’ll also have everything you need for a complete editorial career from day one: the core skills, the specialist knowledge clients ask for, and the know-how to run your own business.
-
How is the suite different from the Proofreader & Editor Course Bundle?
The Proofreader & Editor Course Bundle contains our two core courses, Becoming A Proofreader and Becoming An Editor. The Editorial Course Suite includes both of those, plus our courses for fact-checking, AI prompting, Microsoft Word formatting, and freelancing. Choose the bundle to start proofreading and editing, or choose the suite to learn the full range of editorial services and the business skills to market them.
-
Do I need to complete every course to be eligible for the work guarantee?
No. To be eligible for the work offer with Proofed, you need to complete Becoming A Proofreader and Becoming An Editor, scoring 80% or above in each final assignment. The other courses in the suite help you offer clients more, but they aren’t required for the work guarantee. You can read more about our connection with Proofed on our work guarantee page.
-
Is anyone eligible for the work guarantee?
While anyone is welcome to take courses with Knowadays, including the Editorial Course Suite, the work offer with Proofed is dependent on your location.
To be able to onboard to the Proofed platform, you must be registered for tax purposes in a country that has a dual-tax treaty with the US. This may or may not be the country in which you currently reside. You can review Proofed’s list of eligible countries to make sure you’re in a suitable location for the platform.
-
Is there a time limit on completing the courses?
No! You get lifetime access to every course in the suite, so you can work at your own pace and take time off whenever you need to. And the tutor team is available to help you get back in the swing of things after an extended break.
-
Does it matter which course I take first?
Yes. You should begin with Becoming A Proofreader. A good editor needs to have strong proofreading skills, including being able to recognize and fix errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling, so completing Becoming A Proofreader first builds a strong foundation for Becoming An Editor. You can take the other courses whenever suits you.
-
What if I don’t score 80% in my final assignments?
If you don’t get the score you are hoping for, you can purchase additional attempts with new test documents. The work offer with Proofed applies in the same way whether you need one attempt or three to get a distinction score in each course.
After completing your Becoming A Proofreader final assignment, you will be sent detailed feedback and have the option to schedule a one-on-one call with a tutor to discuss your work. If you want to improve your score, you can purchase up to two more test attempts. You are welcome to progress to the editing course before making another attempt, but we recommend ensuring you have a strong grasp of proofreading before exploring editing concepts.
Similarly, if you would like to try for a higher score after taking the Becoming An Editor final assignment, you can purchase up to two further attempts with new assignment texts.
If you do not achieve distinction scores in both Becoming A Proofreader and Becoming An Editor, then you will not be eligible to take up the work guarantee with Proofed. But it is not the end of the road! Not achieving distinction scores does not automatically mean you are a bad proofreader or editor; it often just means that you need more study and practice to become comfortable with the tasks involved.
Our courses are designed to equip you with all the skills you need to set up as an independent freelancer, no matter how you do on the final assignments. With ongoing access to the lessons, you can continue to learn and develop your skills. Once you’ve studied the areas flagged in your assignment feedback and feel confident in your abilities, you can apply to other proofreading agencies, market yourself on freelancer sites, or launch an independent business.
