1. Do Pay Attention to the Profile Level Meter
The profile level meter is a tool found under your LinkedIn profile. It shows you how strong your profile is based on how much is filled out and suggests what information you should provide to complete it. This can include skills, connections, and past experience.

2. Do Let Clients Know You’re Looking for Work

- Make sure your profile is searchable. Your LinkedIn profile needs to be public, or it won’t show up in searches. To make your profile searchable, go to “Edit public profile” > “Edit visibility,” and then toggle the switch to “On.”
- Use the OpenToWork feature. This feature lets your network know that you’re actively looking for opportunities. To turn it on, go to “Me” > “View profile,” and then under your headline, click the “Open to” button. From here, you’ll be able to specify exactly what type of work you’re looking for.
- Write an update saying you’re available. LinkedIn updates are posts shared with your connections. By posting an update about your work availability and what work you can do, you’ll be letting previous and potential clients know that you’re offering your services.
3. Don’t Just Copy Your Resume
The “About” section of your LinkedIn profile is where you can demonstrate your freelance expertise, but it shouldn’t just be copied straight from your resume. For one, that’s what the “Experience” section is for. What’s more, simply listing your work experience doesn’t make for the most compelling read.
