Have you ever wanted to work from home? Samantha did, which is why she took our Becoming A Proofreader course. And we’ve spoken to her to see how her new career working from home as a freelance proofreader is working out!

Hi, Samantha! What made you consider the Knowadays course?

I wanted to work from home and freelance proofreading seemed like a good option. And while I had learned a little about it already, Knowadays offered much more information. I was also intrigued by the prospect of working for Proofed thanks to the work guarantee.

What were you doing before you started the course?

I was mainly employed as a housekeeper at a conference center.

Was there anything surprising in the course for you?

I was most challenged by the academic proofreading content, particularly the different referencing styles and discerning the appropriate level of editing for essays.

How has your transition to working as a freelance proofreader been?

I’ve become more confident in my abilities since starting with Proofed. And I have been able to start working from home as my main source of income, which has always been my goal.

I tend to work either on my couch or in a reading nook I have set up in my room. Beyond that, my day-to-day routine largely depends on the projects I am working on and when they are due, but I really enjoy having the flexibility to decide when I work and how much I do in a day.

Working From Home Setup

Being self-employed has taken some adjusting, and there are a lot of things that I’ve had to figure out as I go (mainly taxes). But I think I’ve set down solid foundations for my future.

What do you enjoy most about proofreading?

I really enjoy making a document the best it can be. I love catching the tiny details that are easy to overlook. As an English major, moreover, I’m partial to documents with literary analysis and criticism, which are topics I find especially interesting.

What do you do when you aren’t proofreading?

Usually, I’m either reading, knitting, or hanging out with my sister. I also work on an on-call basis for my previous job as a housekeeper. They ask for my help whenever they are busy, although I’m planning on quitting and dedicating myself to proofreading soon.

Finally, do you feel the course was good value for money?

The course was definitely worth the money. I’ve made back what I spent 20 times over, and that’s only after a few months. I’ve even been able to fund some small construction projects on my house, which is good now that I’m working from home most of the time!

Is there anything else you want to share?!

I am looking forward to what the future has for me and my business, and I’m always looking out for the next opportunity to learn and grow as a professional editor.

Hi, Diane. While I cannot comment for Samantha in particular, Proofed (Proofreading Academy's partner company) has still had a decent amount of work available.
