Becoming a freelance proofreader brings flexibility to your weekly routine. You can fit proofreading around other professions and have a varied work schedule. And it may even open you up to entirely new avenues of work. Ben is a recent Knowadays graduate whose working week now includes four occupations! We caught up with him to hear more about this exciting regime.

Hi, Ben! What were you doing before you started the course? Had you done any proofreading?

Before I started the course, I was working as an English teacher and had done some proofreading as a part of that.

How has life changed for you as a freelance proofreader?

I have gained many new skills as a result of becoming a proofreader. Plus I’ve opened up some new avenues of work such as creative writing, which I have never done before.

Nowadays I can work at different times from home, and I can vary my work so I don’t get bored doing the same thing. For instance, some days I do different work outdoors, but when the weather is bad I can look for documents to proofread or do some freelance writing when it’s available.

Could you tell us about your other jobs?

Yes! When I’m not proofreading, I teach English online, do some human resources administration, and run a cleaning business with my wife.

What do you enjoy most about proofreading?

The flexibility to work where and when I want; the variety of subjects I get to learn about; and the opportunity to gain new skills and pursue varied work. Sorry, that’s three – there are just so many!

Have you been self-employed before? How are you finding it?

I have been self-employed for the last three years and have also done it in the past. The flexibility and freedom of being your own boss are hard to beat.

Was the course good value for money?

It was amazing value. I made the money back within four months and have now earned several times the cost of the course through Proofed.

Are you making enough money?

Yes, I am now!

What do you do in your free time?

I’ve been building a camper van during the COVID-19 lockdown and have now been able to enjoy some nights away in the countryside.
