It’s easy to feel swept along by a nine to five. Many students join Knowadays in search of the great work-life balance freelance proofreading offers. Tony is one such graduate who took (and passed) our course and now uses the flexibility of freelancing to spend more time with his family. We reached out to Tony to ask a few questions about his journey to becoming a proofreader.

Hi, Tony! What made you consider the Knowadays course?

I love the English language, reading, and creative writing. My career took off in a different direction but I always aspired to work in some form of publishing.

Proofreading seemed a good fit, and Knowadays helped me hone my pedantic obsession with correctness.

Was there anything challenging in the course for you?

The differences, in many cases quite subtle, between the different English dialects continue to be a challenge.

How has your transition to working as a freelance proofreader with Proofed been?

It’s been a great experience. Everyone is so professional, and I have learned a lot.

What do you enjoy most about proofreading?

The subtleties of the English language. Though I especially enjoy proofreading writing on technology, philosophy, science, and anything creative.

Have you been self-employed before? How are you finding it?

I have not been self-employed before. I now feel unshackled and more empowered to determine and indulge in ventures I did not have time for previously.

I now have the freedom to manage my own time and workload, with no more commuting and a better work-life balance.

What do you do when you aren’t proofreading?

I indulge in my other passions: reading, photography, cinema, and music. But mostly I spend more time with my family.

What has been the single best benefit of having done the course?

The course certificate enables me to prove my credentials as a proofreader.

Is there anything else you want to share?

I think the most essential prerequisite for this job is a passion for the written word.

If you love words but are somewhat challenged when it comes to creative writing, proofreading is a great way to be a part of that industry and hone your language skills.
