What better student job could there be than freelance proofreading? After all, it draws on the same skills you use in academic writing. And the hours are flexible, so you can work around your studies as required. Don’t take our word for it, though! Instead, find out what a recent Knowadays graduate – Eve – had to say on the topic.

Hi, Eve! What made you consider the Knowadays course?

I decided to do the Knowadays course during my summer break, as I felt it would be a valuable life skill and allow me to work part-time while studying.

How did you find the course in general?

Overall, I found it really challenging, which made it even more rewarding when I passed!

How have you found the transition to working as a freelance proofreader?

As I’m only 16, working for Proofed as a freelance proofreader is my first job, so I didn’t know what to expect. But the transition has been as smooth as I could have hoped for! The administrative staff were so supportive, sending helpful feedback on all the documents I submitted and organizing a Zoom call to check how I was doing.

How has life changed for you now as a freelance proofreader?

As an A-Level student and dancer, I was previously unable to find a student job that offered the flexibility I needed. Working for Proofed has been perfect in that respect, as I’m able to fit the hours I work around my study commitments and any dance events I have planned.

Eve: Student, dancer, and freelance proofreader!

What is your day-to-day work like? And where do you work?

My day-to-day life usually consists of school work and dance classes/rehearsals. I fit proofreading around these, usually dedicating my Sundays to working for Proofed.

One of my favorite things about freelance proofreading is being able to work from home in my pajamas! How many other jobs let you do that?

What do you enjoy most about proofreading?

I love proofreading creative writing and humanities/arts related documents.

What has been the single best benefit of having done the course?

The biggest benefit of the course is that it gives you the opportunity to work as a freelance proofreader. It also means you can develop your writing skills while earning money.

The knowledge and experience the Knowadays course has given me has been invaluable. I would recommend it to anyone looking to learn about proofreading.
