To pass a Knowadays course, you must achieve 70% in all assessed assignments. We split our grades into pass (70-74%), merit (75-79%), and distinction (80% or above). As our students come from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds, pass rates vary from week to week. If you’d like to discuss a course’s suitability, contact us to talk it through.

  • If I fail my final assessment, can I retake it?

For courses with final assessments, the first attempt is included in the course price. Our tutors grade your assignments against defined criteria and award marks accordingly. Detailed feedback is provided, highlighting areas for improvement. You can pay to resit the final assessment; please contact us for further details.

  • What happens if I don’t get a distinction on my course?

Pass, merit and distinction grades all indicate successful completion of a course. If you don’t achieve a distinction on the first attempt, you can pay to retake your final assessment. Work opportunities with our partner company are only offered to distinction students.

  • Do I need to be based in a specific country to be eligible to take a course?

You can join a course from anywhere in the world.

  • Is anyone eligible to work for Proofed?

Proofed is a US company and payments to its freelancers have to comply with US tax regulations. To work with Proofed, your country of residence must have a double tax treaty with the US. The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) keeps a list of countries with these treaties, so you can check if yours is included. If so, you’re eligible to work with Proofed.

  • What English dialect are Knowadays courses written in?

Knowadays courses are written in either British or American English. Our editorial courses comprehensively cover US, UK and Australian language variations.

  • Can I still do a course if English is my second language?

Yes, but please note that passing English-based final assessments calls for a high-level understanding of written English.

Proofreading & Editing

  • What editorial courses do you offer?

We offer proofreading and editing courses to meet a range of needs – from beginners looking to gain a new skill and start a new career to professionals who want to continue developing. We also have focused courses for anyone who’d like to specialize in a particular subject area.

  • What kind of writing do your courses cover?

Within our range of courses, we cover the main subjects professional proofreaders and editors are likely to work in. Creative, business, and academic writing are all included. If you’re just starting out, we recommend gaining experience in all areas before you decide to focus on a particular type of writing.

  • Why do your courses teach how to proofread and edit documents written by non-native English speakers?

There’s a significant need for proofreading and editing documents written by people who aren’t native English speakers. Globally, there are more non-fluent than fluent English speakers writing in English, which is why we think it’s important to cover this. Having the skill of working with text written by non-native speakers opens up a huge market for proofreaders and editors.

  • Do you teach the proofreading symbols?

At Knowadays, our courses have always been based on the need for editing and proofreading in a digital world. We recognize that most clients work on a computer with internet access and need documents to be proofread immediately. We don’t teach the proofreading symbols as most proofreaders today are unlikely to use them. There may be some customers who prefer the traditional methods of proofreading, but most work will be done digitally.

  • What’s the difference between proofreading and editing?

The distinction between proofreading and editing can be quite blurred. Technically, proofreaders look for spelling, grammar and syntax errors, without substantially reworking the text. Editors might reorganize or rework copy and recommend revisions to the writer. In real life, the distinction isn’t usually so clear.

If you’d like to learn more about proofreading and editing, why not sign up for a free trial course? It’ll give you a great idea of our course style and contents. We also have some articles about proofreading and editing on our website.

  • I’m a very experienced proofreader and editor. Should I take a course?

Lots of experienced professionals take Knowadays courses. Maybe you wish to brush up your existing skills as part of your professional development. Or perhaps you’re looking to find new work. If you complete Becoming A Proofreader and earn a distinction grade of 80% or above, you’ll be offered the opportunity to take a 20-document trial as a freelance proofreader with our partner company, Proofed. If you complete the trial successfully, you’ll have the opportunity to take on more work with Proofed. You should note that Proofed is a US company so can only work with freelancers based in countries with which the US has a dual-tax agreement. You can see the Internal Revenue Service’s list to see if your country of residence is covered.

  • I’d like to work on novels and creative writing. Is this course relevant for me?

Absolutely. Our courses include modules on creative writing and the publishing industry, so you learn all you need to know about working on this type of copy.

  • How are your courses different from other proofreading and editing courses?

Knowadays teaches a broad range of skills to prepare you to work as a professional proofreader or editor. Instead of having to take numerous courses to learn about business, creative, and academic writing, you’ll find everything you need in one place. We also teach how to proofread and edit different English dialects and work with various academic referencing styles. If you want to learn specific skills, we have short courses available that focus on these. Please take a look at our course summary page, which outlines the benefits of the different courses we offer.

  • How does the guaranteed work offer with Proofed work?

Graduates who have achieved a distinction grade of 80% or more in Becoming A Proofreader are automatically given the opportunity to work on professional assignments with Proofed on a trial basis. To find out what the trial period involves and what you can expect from working with Proofed, head over to our Guaranteed Work page.

Communication Success

  • Do I need any qualifications to take this course?

No. Everyone can benefit from this course.

  • What do I need to get started?

All you need is a computer to access the course materials and the commitment to improve!

  • Is there a time limit to complete the course?

It is estimated that the course will take between 6 and 8 hours over a period of 7 to 10 days. However, you can work at a pace that’s right for you. You have access to the course and materials for a period of 12 months.

  • Does it matter where I’m based?

Not at all. People from all over the world can access and use the course. All you need is an internet connection.

  • What resources do I need to complete this course?

You will need a computer with internet access. In addition, if you prefer to print out the Toolkit and complete it by hand, you will also need access to a printer. You may also want to record your rehearsals and talk. If so, you will need a camera.

  • Why a five-minute talk?

A five-minute talk is the perfect length to start your Communication Success: Beginnings journey. It’s long enough so you need to use the full Communication Success process, but short enough to make the learning more efficient and direct. Also, your five-minute talk can then become a building block for longer talks and presentations as well as help you prepare for shorter talks, like elevator pitches or dynamic conversations.

  • Can I do a talk that is longer than five-minutes?

If you want to, yes. The tools and approaches in this course are applicable to all types of communication opportunities. However, developing and delivering a five-minute talk is recommended to begin with. You can then apply what you’ve learned to longer and shorter talks.

  • What’s in the Toolkit?

Your Toolkit is a fillable PDF file that you will download to your own device. It is your place to develop and learn from each of your talks. In it, you will find twelve Tools: For every communication opportunity, you will work through a series of questions and prompts designed to guide you through the process of developing your best possible talk. In each tool, you will complete a Reflect, Ideate, Evaluate, and Commit section. Once you’ve committed, you then move on to the next lesson.

  • Do I have to complete each section of the Tool?

In order to receive the full benefit of the course, yes. However, you should move at a pace that’s best for you. If you do choose to skip a Tool or section within a Tool, it would be beneficial to, at least, review the content and contemplate how it adds to your learning experience.

  • What are some typical-use cases for the five-minute talk?

Your five-minute talk can be used for a wide variety of communication opportunities, including: keynote speeches, breakout sessions, panel discussions, sales pitches, media events, team meetings, one-to-ones, and presentations to management. You may also create a talk for a personal communication opportunity, such as a school project or a wedding toast.

  • Can I do this with a partner?

Absolutely! You can coordinate with other Communication Success: Beginnings participants to work together on multiple talks with the same topic or merge individual talks into a longer, multi-topic talk. This is an excellent way to work and learn together. One note, however, the goal of the course is still for each participant to develop and deliver their own talk.

  • How can I use this with my team?

This is one of the unique benefits of Communication Success: Beginnings. Have your team work together to create talks on the team’s culture, mission, or vision. Or create a series of talks to help onboard new team members. By having all the members of your team participate in the course, you will raise the overall effectiveness of the team’s communication. We call this creating a Culture of Communication Success. A better-communicating team is a better-performing team.

  • Can I use the program to develop and deliver more than one talk?

Yes. This course will leave you with a repeatable process that you can use for every communication opportunity. This leads to ongoing improvement of your communication performance. You may access the course and materials for a 12-month period.

  • What if I have been assigned a topic for my talk?

This is very common if you are participating in Communication Success: Beginnings as part of a team or larger organization. You should still complete the Toolkit sections related to your topic to learn how an effective topic is determined.

  • Can I deliver my talk virtually?

Yes. The Communication Success: Beginnings course is designed to help you improve your performance in different communication modes, including live, virtual, and hybrid. The secret to delivering a better virtual talk is to deliver a better talk.

  • How long will it take to complete the course?

It is estimated that the Communication Success: Beginnings course will take 6–8 hours to complete over the course of 7–10 days. However, you should work at a pace that is right for you.

  • Is the information I share secure?

Yes. First, by downloading and using the Toolkit on your own device, you are not sharing your work with Kennedy Speech Communications or Knowadays. It is entirely within your control. Second, any information you provide in registering for or managing the course is secured by Knowadays using industry standard practices. Learn more about Knowadays security processes here.

  • Will there be additional Communication Success courses?

Yes. Communication Success: Beginnings is just the first in a series of courses designed to improve individual, team and organizational communication performance. These include more advanced communication approaches that focus on content development, rehearsal and delivery, as well as “micro-learnings” that can be effectively applied to specific communication opportunities.
