It’s that time of year again! And to help you with your Christmas shopping this festive season, we’ve compiled a list of perfect presents for the proofreaders in your life.

1. Technological Treats

Proofreading can be hard work. And if you know a proofreader who is struggling with stress, why not get them a technological treat to make their working days easier? Options include:

  • Noise-canceling headphones – These can be used while proofreading on the go or at home to block out noises of children, pets, or housemates. Either way, a good set of noise-canceling headphones can minimize distractions and boost productivity.
  • Portable Wi-Fi hotspot – Perfect for any proofreader who likes to work while traveling. Make sure they never lose their connection while working on something important!
  • Smart mug warmer – Available in a variety of designs, a mug warmer will keep coffee or tea at a pleasant drinking temperature even on the busiest days.

Whether novelty or practical, tech-related gifts are a great idea for any proofreader.

2. A Comfortable Workspace

Proofreading can mean sitting at a computer for a long time. To make sure your proofreading pal is comfortable, then, why not spruce up their workspace? You could try:

  • A seat cushion or back support – Getting a seat cushion and/or back support for a chair can make desk work a little more comfortable and reduce back pain.
  • An adjustable or standing desk – An ergonomic desk or laptop stand allows you to work while standing, offering a great way to combat back pain and improve concentration.
  • A wrist rest – Working on a computer for long periods can cause wrist strain. But a cushioned rest will keep the proofreader in your life comfortable and protected.
  • A house plant – A plant is a great low-budget option to brighten up any indoor workspace.

If none of these appeal, think about the proofreader you know. Where do they work? What could make it more comfortable or productive? This should give you a couple of great ideas!

3. Membership to a Proofreading Society

Belonging to a reputable proofreading society can be truly valuable for freelancers. Societies such as the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and the Editorial Freelancers Association (EfA), for instance, offer their members access to training, resources, and membership directories where proofreaders can advertise their services.

If you know a proofreader, then, why not get them a membership to a professional group?

4. Something to Read

There are many books aimed at proofreaders and editors, so this is a great gift option!

For instance, style guides, such as The Associated Press Stylebook and The Chicago Manual of Style, are invaluable resources for proofreaders. If you know which style guides your friend or family member uses, then, you can get them a copy (or an online subscription).

Alternatively, you could also get them a book about the English language, such as Anguished English by Richard Lederer or Playing with Words by Barry J. Blake. While less practical than a style guide, these books offer an entertaining and informative look at language and writing. And since proofreaders are by nature language lovers, they are the perfect audience!

Of course, you could always get them a trashy detective novel instead. Even proofreaders and editors need a bit of downtime, so lighter reading material is appreciated now and then.
